I never said it was "fair" competition - and I agree that it is not. And, as I have said, I do not favor the public option, I'm just not as scared of it as most of the right-wing oppositionists. As has been pointed out many times, the government isn't as good as running businesses as the private sector, so even though it wouldn't be fair competition - it would provide competition, but it would not put the private sector insurers out of business.
For those who cannot afford insurance through the private sector, a public option (in some form) may be a good idea - but it needs a lot of work in its current form. There are a lot of Americans that need health insurance that have been priced out of the market. Until we find a way to get them some form of coverage, they will continue to be a drain on the rest of us, causing our premium to continue to increase faster than wages. More and more Americans will be without coverage and the less people you have covered, the higher the cost.
I don't like the current plans - but something needs to be done and I haven't seen anyone put forth a better plan. Unfortunately, the GOP (to my dismay) have only expended effort to kill any kind of reform. That just isn't acceptable.
Best,
Robert A. Franco
