Given our border states with Mexico and strong Spanish influences in many parts of the Western region, the need to do so with Hispanic names is also of great complexity. With most land going back to Mexican land grants and the prior Spanish Crown grants (the Ranchos system), it is really necessary in California to know such permutations.
We review Carl as Carlo and Carlos. John is naturally Juan and variations thereon.
Given that San Francisco is nearby and work is often ordered that includes the modern transgender, transsexual and other-gender communities, it is common that we run female permutations of male names and vice versa.
The review of male family names with the wife's first name is obvious, but new gender-neutral laws allow a man to take the woman's last name in California upon marriage. Seems unlikely to some, but sitting here and watching people fill out marriage license forms daily, this question is asked at least once a week in suburban San Mateo County, so I'll bet it's asked even more frequently in SF or LA, so running the womans "maiden name" as her husband's last name is now a MUST.
