When I started searching, 35 years ago, the county charged 25 cents per page and I charged 50. Now they charge 10 cents so I charge 35. But I only charge for full searches. Continuation copies are included unless there are more than normal, say over 30. The other day speaking with another searcher I discovered that if you were to order copies from the county clerk by phone or mail they charge $2 per page. 10 cents if you shoot them yourself in person at the courthouse. So I've decided to tell these new companies that only want to pay me the county cost that the county cost is $2 and I'll be glad to hold that price.
For me, when some new company starts the conversation by trying to cut my fees, speed up my service, etc. I get a bad feeling. They rarely ask about my experience but they are always interested in E&O coverage. And usually they are slow payers.
I'm much more interested in doing business with a company that is looking for properly performed searches.
