You are right. It may be worth it to serve the client in an effort to convince them to pay. I have found that since I became licensed to practice law, collections have been much easier. A strongly worded letter on my law firm stationary has worked much better than I thought it would. Since they know that I do not have to "hire an attorney" to enforce my rights, they seem much more willing to pay what they owe. In one case, I even got an apology from the client along with the check.
It might be worth while to find a local attorney that will write a letter to your clients in default to let them know that you are serious about your collection efforts.
