I agree that online courses may have the potential to be valuable tools for continuing education. But, they aren't going to teach you to abstract if you don't have any prior knowledge and experience. The online courses that promise to teach you to abstract and get you business are worthless, in my opinion. Years ago, we purchased one and I would never hire anyone who claimed to learn abstracting from it.
In regard to continuing education, I think it would be difficult to put together a meaningful course (though not impossible). So much of what we do is dependent on state law that it would be tough to provide reliable information for a national audience.
