Just slightly off-subject, but touching on something Marian said, since we cover some of the same areas.  What's really disturbing to me is the number of misindexed documents in say, Fairfax County.  I find one every other search.  If these errors are brought to the clerk's attention, there is often nothing noting that this was originally indexed erroneously.   We don't typically print index info prior to recording - only during the original search.   Also, the county keeps no record of an effective date for any given day, so if a claim were made that something was recorded and there was in fact an intervening lien, we have no proof of what the actual "thru" or "effective" or "verified" date was on the day we recorded.  I know, too, that Arlington County clerks will say that records are effective as of the day before (always "yesterday"), however until very recently, documents were still "incomplete" in the indicies up to 6 or more weeks prior to "yesterday".  These docs are not yet verified or completely indexed and there is nothing on their computers to show what they consider their "thru" date.  I have sadly taken to running just the last name "smith" and checking how far back it takes to find a "smith" that is fully indexed - don't think that will stand up in court.  It's very frustrating and very unnerving to say the least...
