Confronted with this situation, our policy for years has to be to furnish a copy of my Army vaccination record (23 shots in two years) and require in turn that they send me the results of a Wassermann test.

Same with the tire kickers who want 'references'.  I turn the tables and say we want references from YOU, to help us ascertain you will be using our data in a responsible manner.
