I'm with you there, Old Man.  Improving oneself is always a worthwhile pursuit in the long run.  The key is finding a way to make it economically feasible.  Right now, it's booming around these parts due to the energy industry investing heavily in the Marcellus Shale.  It's been very lucrative for the abstractors and examiners who were willing to make the transition when the demand for surface titles for the banks and title companies fell off.
