Leigh, it depends on the client and the search product, but yes we do Abstract a lot by hand.  Many of our clients though do require partial or full copies.  The fees vary from .25 a page to $5 a page depending on the County and the type of document.  There are a couple clerks offices that offer free online access with copies, but most appear to be transitioning to pay per use sites where we're either paying a flat fee per month or per document.  The documents searched in New York are housed at the County Clerks office or the City Registers Office for New York City and the Boroughs.
