I found myself in that exact situation a couple of years ago. Most of the conventional title work around here dried up seemingly overnight. I stayed afloat by taking a position as a consultant in Westinghouse Electric's Legal Department. After that, I managed to find work running titles for a local oil & gas broker. Since then, I've been doing project work for a handful of energy and land service companies. There's a shortage of experienced examiners throughout the Marcellus Shale region and that's where you'll find most of the work is.
You may want to consider doing a Google or Bing search for Marcellus Shale or energy jobs. You may have to travel or relocate temporarily, but it's good money, and best of all, I have yet to have a problem with getting paid (knock wood).
Hope this helps.

Scott Perry
