I’ve been an independent abstractor for 20 years, with most of my work in three counties. I started working remotely during COVID and haven’t returned to the courthouse. But I knew those counties very well. I pay a little over $100 per month for E&O and $200 per month for various data subscriptions for those counties. They’ve worked for years on backloading, so I can cover 30 year searches. Most offices where I already had copy accounts will send older documents in a pinch but I have to know exactly what I want. If they or an abstracting friend can’t help, you may have to drive there or decline the job. So while it is possible, your options will be more limited. Good luck.
