Routinely check.  I once found a 3 million dollar attachment that went on record against my seller, a local builder, literally 20 minutes before I got to the recording counter.  No one was real happy when I arrived back at the closing table with unrecorded documents. 
I also recently (in the last three months)  found a large-ish attachment against Wells Fargo Bank that was recorded in the gap.  That resulted in another unhappy conversation with the buyers' attorney.
