In my last abstractor's class in May, one county recorder told me she was forced to return a $400,000 mortgage because the mortgage registration tax was off by 15 cents. The County Treasurer told her to send it back. She offered to "chip in the 15 cents" rather than deal with the hassle and cost of returning all the documents, but the Treasurer said no. Not only does it pay to check a map, it pays to double check your fees!
