Indeed. As someone who's not only a title abstractor but a "card carrying" member of the liberal media establishment (a photojournalist), I've spent many decades with the understanding that my Statue of Liberty pictures are indeed mine to own and control exclusively.
If a newspaper wanted to publish them, then they'd need to pay me for the right to do so.
Same issue is raised with document images taken on my camera, with my labor, skill and time.
Hence, while some of my abstracts are commissioned works whereby the images are done for the client, there are many instances where my photography of documents is on my own time and volition, and might be mine to use if only I'd bother to embed a copyright watermark in them.
