Under 25 years free or cheap online - William Pattison /CA

We don't do under-25 years searches since the information can be accessed from the county recorders online, or purchased for $6-$15 from sites like HomeInfoMax, SiteX, and DocEdge.

Why anyone would pay me $40 for a cheaper search makes no good business sense, so by default, I assume that the only reason that they are asking it of me is because the current ownership deed predates 25 years and will involve a slog through old microfiche, microfilm and books, which is always more time consuming.

I don't turn away business, but those that want a current ownership search for 10 years or so, are one-off clients who will not offer repeat business once they figure out that it's cheaper elsewhere, so don't rely on them for future income.

Caveat:  naturally, not all counties have online records that go back 25 years.  Some are better, but many are of a shorter extent if they are online at all.  Most of these are rural counties that can involve a long road trip to reach.  Charge in advance for this;  get them to PayPal you for this as an up-front outlay of your time, gas, travel expenses, etc...
