Canon does make great scanners.  We have been using the Canon DR-3060 for about 1- years now.  We have had two of them and they are real work horses - very fast and extremely reliable.   The drawback, of course, is they are rather expensive.  I think our current scanner is nearing the end of its life-cycle and I may try a Fujitsu SnapScan. 

I have heard some really good things about the Fujitsu SnapScan and the specs look promising.  When I bought my first Canon, there were no consumer grade scanners on the market that were anywhere close to matching the speed.  Now, however, I think consumer grade scanners have come a long way.
