Not all nonprofits are churches and not all rely upon individual donations. There are corporations who sponsor charities, certain investments that charities can engage in to grow money and government grants to fund specific projects.
Implementing smart technology, costs of running charities can be exceedingly small. Electronic communication over USPS mailings, freeware accounting software instead of CPA's, computer software over secretaries, and other digital implements will stretch the donated dollar in appropriate ways that neither offshore nor replace domestic workers.
Ensuring bylaws, charters and policies that keep costs and compensation to living wage standards instead of unreasonable corporate boardroom bonuses is a good place to start.
Nonprofits corporations, not-for-profit groups, civics groups, fraternal benevolent societies, unincorporated associations, clubs, foundations and churches all form a part of the answer.
