In at least 3 counties we search they produce a daily index book that runs for a month. I don't search the permutations for the last name except common spelling (like Smith with an e). In the index books (still in use here as the computerized indexes may only go back a few years), it is very common to find only the first initial and last name, forcing you to search many different names. If you find one document executed by a middle name, it is likely there are more. Some of our counties are scanning the old index books and documents, but not all. It sounds like you might be up against a serious search issue since the books aren't even available to double check; I don't think there is any real way to avoid errors in indexing as humans input the information in the computers the same way they typed or wrote up the old books.
