Maybe their restaurants are doing so good that they feel they don't have to cut as many corners in the title business.

Actually, we laugh at their restaurant acquisitions, but the investment strategy they have seems very much like Warren Buffett's.  A big part of Buffett's empire was created by acquiring insurance companies and directly investing the capital in boring but profitable businesses.
