Technically, a life estate is an equitable interest, so Alan doesn’t really “own” anything other than the right to “use, occupy and enjoy” the property. Assuming the conveyance to the trust to be a valid one, the life estate conveyed would exist for and during Alan’s lifetime, not during the life of the trust. I think it’s called a life estate “pour autre vie” (sp?) in this scenario.
