I agree with you. There have been a rash of mass murders in the past two years and most if not all of them were perpetrated by people with mental disorders. Among the commentaors on the news this week was one that said mental problems are among the greatest causes of these murders. Maybe a mental health check in addition to a criminal background check would help. Also limiting the sales of semi automatic, pistols and assalt rifles should be addressed. They are not needed for hunting. When was the last time a herd of deer attacked a hunter?
As you may have concluded I am an animal rights advocate. I got into a heated argument with a cop last year over the misuse of guns. I was driving home. About a block away from home the traffic slowed to a crawl. I soon found out why. Someone had hit a female deer, and left her lying in the road. Some of the neighbors rushed out and began helping by directing traffic away from the deer. Both her front and back left legs were broken. She could not stand. I helped to drag her to the side of the road to get her out of traffic. A cop showed up and announced that he was going to shoot her. I argued with the cop, and offered to pay to have the deer transported to a vet in New Haven that maintained late hours. The cop said no. He could not wait to pull his gun out and use it. The only thing that prevented him was that he needed the approval of the Dept. of Environmental Protection since it was a wild animal on a State road. The DEP finally showed up. I tried to reason with them and repeated my offer to pay to have the deer transported to the vet, or alternately taken to my property a block away and I would arrange for a vet. The DEP supported the cop, and argued that I was prolonging the deer's pain. To which I responded that if she could understand what was going on she would prefer pain to death. It was a losing argument. The deer looked at me with beautiful soft brown eyes. I petted her one last time and walked back to my car. As I opened the door to my car I heard the cop's gun fire.
