It seems to me that if we’re going to require attorneys to be licensed, there really should be some sort of mentoring period, a “learner’s permit” for new lawyers, if you will. 

Our county bar association sponsors a pro bono program which provides free or low-cost legal assistance to families and individuals with limited financial resources.  Local volunteer attorneys donate their time to the program to help people resolve legal issues such as child custody, landlord/tenant disputes, etc. 

Serving a residency in such an environment at an entry-level wage could help recent grads gain valuable experience while assisting folks who may not otherwise be able to afford counsel.
