I have dealt with many companies that pick and choose which invoices they are going to pay. From my experience, when there are gaps in an account and they start making excuses or promises to pay, that should be a red flag, even if they were good payers in the past, stop the work completely. Chances are you are going to get burned in the end. A reliable company will always pay in a timely manner. Period.
