Excuse some people Don (not my fellow ladies). I simply clicked on your name and found it says you are a software consultant and your questions seem geared toward such. Hopefully some of the answers following below mine are kinder and are more helpful. Some folks are distrustful and lose sight of the fact this isn't an insider CIA site and not everyone is looking to 'steal' their work. Hopefully your statement that you're not looking to compete will help - otherwise you'll get beaten up by some who think you're actually thinking of getting into this business. May as well look into selling printers and carbon paper.
If you're a software consultant, I can tell you there are some folks who still think email is a new fangled thing, others are tech-savvy just like anywhere. With business being down, you may find people are less willing to invest in themselves/their businesses despite conventional business wisdom saying now would be the time to invest in one's business. However, even knowing this doesn't mean I'm making any large investments at this time either. Our ways of doing business are becoming obsolete with banks cutting corners and India doing online searches for $5 (among other things). I'm having trouble following those sales adages when the future is murky from so many angles.
(FYI - We're paperless, don't own a fax machine, our office phone is my 'family' on my cell plan and pens are hard to come by. I return to sender any paper invoices we get - I got tired of saying month after month not to send them. We're in the tech-friendly segment).
Best of luck! You can click the little envelope to email me if you have questions. Kym
