I did not say that expecting to be compensated for providing a service is an absurd practice...only that up-charging for copies is. I see the search fee as your compensation. Do you spend more $$$ on fuel/tolls/parking/etc on searches that require full copies? As I previously stated, as long as you are adequately charging a fair price for your searches, you should not have any problem budgeting the costs that you mentioned and should not need to overcharge for copies. I've been doing title work for almost 20 years and have not needed to charge more than the county rate. Does it take longer to make the additional copies? Of course it does...and there are some orders where there are so many copies you need huge binder clips to keep them in order...but then there are also orders where your current owner took title over 42 years ago and you don't have to make a ton of extra copies. It all balances out in the end in my opinion.
