Apparently this is allowed in some states (or counties), but you sure as heck can't do that in Michigan (and I'm willing to bet in a lot of places).  There are many counties here where you can't even take your PHONE into the vault.  The images belong to the Register of Deeds.  Period.  You want a copy, you pay for it.  In one county here, I had to sign a CONTRACT stating that any image I bought would not be resold!
