I don't have an answer, but I'm glad you raised the question. In TN, to create a joint tenancy or tenancy by the entirety, the deed merely has to state "husband and wife" (or some variation - not sure about the specifics). Marital status clearly affects inheritance rights, and sometimes you can't follow a chain of title without that information.
Just a couple of months ago, a Federal Court ruled that TN will have to recognze same-sex marriage, and that seems to be the trend in every state where the issue has gone to court. It's not clear to me yet whether the specific wording in the deeds will also have to change to reflect the new marriage laws.
