I'm going to disagree. Abstractors should charge more for copies than the county charges. It takes must more time to get copies. If client A only requests a copy of the vesting deed, but client B wants copies of all of the deeds in the chain, the plat, the mortgages, liens, easements, etc... the abstractor will spend much more time getting all of those copies and preparing them to be returned to the client. Even if they are all online, it takes additional time.
Why shouldn't the abstractor make a little more money from client B? I always charged an additional amount for copies. Now... I only did that IF the CLIENT requested the copies. And, with our search reports, the additional copies weren't really needed because we abstracted out all of the pertinent information from each document on the report... names of the parties, amounts, dated dates, filed dates, volume and page, and notes regarding any defects.
