You stated you were in the business 20 years or so. I somehow doubt that or you wouldn't have called us "oldtimers". You would also be in that category. I also cannot believe you are just now finding out that the standard rate is 1.00/copy.
You are panicking over outsourcing. Have pride in yourself and charge a reasonable amount for your services and your knowledge. A good abstractor knows there's more to a search than reporting an open mortgage. No, things will never be the "way it use to be" but that's the thing about life. It's constantly changing.
I personally go through 2 high yield toners a month and about 2 cases of paper a month. I am on my 5th scanner. I am not giving that away. By the time you pay your taxes you probably have nothing left.
Be a little open_minded. We can't all be wrong.
