Philip:  After reading through the original post and all of the responses a second time, I have to say that I disagree with you.  All responses demonstrate an understanding that releasing the mortgage did not discharge the debt.  The replies were simply suggestions of different scenarios that might have been the reason for the collateral release.  With the limited information available from the original post, I would say that most of the scenarios presented were possibilities.
