Here's the message I sent:
Dear Ms. Parrish,
I help run
http://www.sourceoftitle.com, a title industry website. A user posted a message in our forum tonight that expressed outrage over the fact that you had posted on the Broward County Appraiser website home page that Florida’s recognition of same-sex marriage was a “tremendous step forward for equality.” He or she posted your email address and encouraged others who were “pro-family” like he or she to send you emails to tell you how offensive that sentence is.
I write to do just the opposite. I think it is great—and entirely appropriate—that you’re letting same-sex couples know that you will be doing your duty to uphold their legal rights with a smile on your face. I think this is particularly appropriate in light of the fact that some public officials have publicly stated that they will not uphold this newly recognized right. It’s helpful in this situation for public officials to let same-sex couples know that they are not hostile to their rights, so that the same-sex couples will not be discouraged from exercising them.
Cheers!
Slade Smith
