Thank you for responding!  No...I checked that, along with all "dated date of checks received", against invoices.  (in one case - there were NO 2015 invoices!!).  Even if that were the case...can a firm send a 2015 1099-MISC for a payment that was made after 12/31/2015??? Wouldn't that payment have to be 1099'd for 2016? Again - thank you for caring enough to respond and help!!!
