... and therein lies the problem. NALTEA is an "association" and it is only as strong as its membership. If people ask "what has NALTEA done" instead of "what can I do to help," it will continue to be an uphill struggle. As one of the founding members of NALTEA and long-time board member, I have had first hand experience.
I agree that is a struggle. During my time with NALTEA, I advocated for licensing at the state level. I was of the opinion that meaningful licensing and testing would weed out a lot of incompetent competition, and most likely make it more difficult to offshore our profession. I also worked with David Bloys to help bring awareness of the danger of posting all of our real estate records on the Internet, which also would have made offshoring more difficult.
There just wasn't enough support among the abstractors to gain any traction. Sadly, apathy has been the biggest problem in our industry.
