Honestly Alix, I'd approach it like any other instance where I hadn't requested a fee approval prior to doing the work but hoped to collect a higher fee due to the nature of the search (and not my actual expenditures)--with it in mind that my client might refuse to pay the additional amount and the willingness to accede to their demand on that front, but the expectation they'd be willing to play ball in most cases.
