I used to have someone in almost every county here. In the mid-late 2000's there was a ton of work and not great online access which was meant we were all busy. Over the years a lot of counties came online and with that the orders started dropping. They couldn't make their business work with a few orders a week going to a handful of counties. That coupled with all the companies that went under and the prevalence of off shore title work left a lot of independent contractors in a place of no return. I think the CA abstractors that are still going are leery of taking on new clients as we all have been burned at one point. It's a very interesting time in the industry for sure.
