Hmmm... It's possible that it was from a a different site you had open in a different tab/window, it's also possible that you have a downloaded toolbar or other application that came with malware that's causing pop-ups (if this is the case, you should also notice your browser slowing down also), and I guess it's possible it's SoT but I've never had a pop-up nor seen an ad from Staples. Very strange.
