I believe it was a cash sale, likely with little investigation into the title and no representation.
The "cobbled together" situations can be interesting. I remember writing about a case a few years back where the developer was going to expand a reservoir and build a grand residential development with dozens if not hundreds of houses around the lake. He snapped up all the property in an around the lake. But he didn't get good title to one piddly little acre parcel that was going to be flooded at the bottom of the lake. As I recall, the owner of that parcel was holding out for millions. That developer had title insurance, however.
