To start, the county charges 14.50 per recording (46.00 total) per document for technology fee, which goes towards the computers and computer programs and any other equipment they need to operate. Next the Title companies who also are both closing and abstracting pay copy fees of an average of $1.00 per page. The County gets to use the tract for free, use county employees and then bill a flat fee for abstracting.. they carry 50K in insurance for their abstracting at most, some carry no insurance. But the real kicker is they pay no state licensing fees, no copy charges, no tract index usage fees and they are tax exempt for income taxes, and NO E&O..
