If I'm remembering correctly, this certification program NALTEA offers is the same one I heard about a few years ago? You had to sit through an all day conference and pay several hundred dollars and pass a test? Whoever was offering that, every abstractor I spoke to was angry and stressed that they had to do this in order to keep one of their clients. Most abstractors can not take a whole day off, pay to travel, and pay hundreds to take a test. An abstractor working alone (there are still a lot of us) cant afford to lose a days pay, pay travel expenses, pay the rather large fee and have to do this and pay again every two (or three?) years. And pay to be a NALTEA member. And take more time off for continuing education. There's no time or money in the budget for that. Abstracting companies can do this, lone abstractors cannot. I know I'm not the only one barely getting by; my fellow local abstractors are in the same boat and refuse to post on this site. They don't want other abstractors knowing anything about them or their business. They surely don't want to be in an organization with their competition. My feeling is this, the lone abstractor is a thing of the past and myself and others are having a hard time accepting this, we are the mom & pop's.
