I told SL that I simply would not do it. They pay well, though their billing policy sucks (you can't submit an invoice for a search until it is 30 days old). They are not a high-volume client. I have searched for them for probably 6 or 7 years.

But this is ridiculous. Why in the world would there need to be a background check on folks that simply search through the public land records? It's ludicrous. I won't do it, and certainly wouldn't pay for it myself even if I were willing to do it.

They called me last week, asking why I hadn't done it yet.  It sounded like they were making calls trying to figure out why the vast majority of abstractors were willing to forego their work, rather than comply with a background check.
