PLEASE stick with Brother. As a vendor manager that receives pdf's via e-mail on an hourly basis, I can tell you that too many printers make pdf files HUGE and there is nothing you can do about it -- no setting that you can adjust. Some manufacturer's are just set up that way (and yes, I had my IT guy work on this). It's so bad that sometimes I have to physically print out a file and then rescan it on my Brother to make the file size something reasonable.
We have used nothing but Brother product for 15 years, both monochrome and color laser (for my photography). Our current monochrome workhorse is the MFC-8710. 5,000 copies from every laser cartridge. MUCH more cost effective than ink. They sell for under $400. Oh, and it doesn't matter what the paper size is. It easily handles a mix of letter and legal all in one bunch.
You shouldn't be printing much at all -- Why are you printing if I may ask? The only time I print anymore is with the above-mentioned super huge incoming files. Everything else is "printed" to a pdf (we use CutePDF), even the orders I do myself on line. Nothing needs to be printed, not even the write-up sheet (because that's in a typeable form I made up and then I print THAT to the pdf file and everything is attached to it within the computer system).
