The work you performed remains your property exclusively until it is paid for. If they refuse to pay you, demand that they return the search, all copies of it and a letter representing that they will not use any portion of it in their closing. If they use your search to close, they have waived any complaints that they may have had with it. If they do not return your search to you within a reasonable time they have accepted the work, and you may want to consider a small claims action against them for unjust enrichment or breech of an implied or express contract. If they are doing business in your state, they are almost certainly required to apply to the Secretary of State's Office to obtain a certificate of authority, to appoint a statutory agent to receive process and they should therefore be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts in your state
