I have always wondered about this too... I guess some counties have a lot more available online than ours do around here. We only have 2 counties available online and only one of those has images available - the other is index only. The indexes may go back to the 80's, but the images in the one county only goes back to the mid-90's.
More importantly, the online tax information is extremely behind the actual records at the courthouse. And, there is no way to check probate or common please courts online. Anyone who was going to do an online search around here would be taking a huge risk.
As for technology - I love it!! I am a "gadget-guy!" Still, I miss the old index books. For some purposes, computers just aren't as good and I think indexing our public records is one of them.
However, I can't blame any abstractor who takes advantage of the technology that is available to make his life easier... just so he is aware of the limitations of it. Above all else, providing a reliable product is the most important thing - so long as that is being done all is well.
Best,
Robert A. Franco
