Indeed, I am sympathetic with a caveat emptor approach to the free market. In this case, we did indeed have a clear agreement that they would pay the costs of copies. We have that in emails that formed the basis of our mutual understandings. We had no problem offering them the labor for free, but we were certainly not going to take a daily personal financial loss in the tens or hundreds of dollars for copies. Cost of delivery was up to them to pay, so they had messenger service accounts for acquiring the copies, once we had them in our possession, or otherwise for smaller docs, I was willing to scan them in and shoot pdf's over to them by email. No animosity and all good faith, good will, good Samaritan acts by us, really.
