I have to agree with you on the pay altho, I have been treated pretty well by my employers in that regard - never been an independent/contractor.  It seems like the more knowledge you have the quicker they think you can get it done and if you have multiple accounts they feel like you should be able to cut the fee cuz you were already going to that county for someone else.  In their minds they are doing you a favor by contacting you. 

I  think it is wonderful that they welcomed you back so warmly, truly a rare experience.  Hopefully, they will continue to send work your way.

Good luck with your future endeavors and hopefully you Mom is doing well.  My mom just had a stoke too - actually 2, but rather small.  God bless you for being there for her and making her such a priority in you life.  Too many times we see families that don't help each other in times of need.  Your rewards will come to you in the end.
