I disagree.  I believe that an occasional courtesy for a client is worthwhile.  Especially if it doesn't require much time and there is virtually no liability - as is probably the case with obtaining a few copies.  I think asking for "cost" is very reasonable and I'd expect to be reimbursed in a reasonable amount of time.

But, look at it this way.  You learned not to do business with them in the future before they racked up a big bill with lots of searches.
