My understanding of the New York State sales tax, is that the only clients that have to pay this are the ones who are physically located in New York. Those are the ones you would have to bill and collect from. But you have to get a sales tax number, I think thats what its called in order to collect it.
This is per the gal's accountant who does Suffolk county for me. And only on title searches, if you also do criminal searches as she does, this is not a sales taxable item.
I wonder if that would also apply to document retrieval or if a client just wants liens and judgments run, because my understanding is the tax is specifically on title searches.
