How do we get out of the hamster wheel?

Timely Document's Blog ::

"The true foundation of republican government is the equal right of every citizen in his person and property and in their management." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, 1816

(Note: this isn't a comment on republican vs democracy, we are talking republican vs monarcy in 1816...)

Home ownership is one of the freedoms the initial settlers of American were striving for, their own land, religious freedom, freedom from overbearing taxes - etc.

We all still have equal rights for home ownership. The general slant has been towards renting and since most use mortgages to obtain funds, many have had their ownership endangered due to loss of work or other financial strain. For some it is just plain fear to enter into the housing market. This isn't our basic rights being taken away, it's like we are giving it away.

Additionally, over the past few decades it has become almost necessary for both husband and wife in order to work to support a family. More my point, is that many can't even afford to purchase a home, they are already up to their eyeballs in debt or they just know that they will be if they take on mortgage payments, all utilities, repair costs, property taxes, etc.

A majority of the members of this site are well educated, aware and tend toward being somewhat politically opinionated. I don't boast that I am more educated on the history of our country, home ownership or the history of mortgages in American.

BUT, if you look at the history of Rome, Greece, England and America - they are all littered with cyclic economies and governments that have no real workable solutions to the big problems - economy, education, conflict (war)... I can't think of any civilization in history that has obtained stability for more than a few hundred years before crashing into oblivion.

If we didn't have these hamster wheels, think about all of the things that could be accomplished - both personally and as a country. So many things could be done in the arts, in science, exploration, community and cultural activities, you name it.

Keep on Runnin'

I think we continue on what you call the "hamster wheel" because societies, for whatever reason, either initially or over time infuse their systems with the perspectives of an elite. If there were ever an attempt to break this dynamic it was our founding fathers who attempted to design a system in which the governmental balances were such as to prevent the concentation of power in a few.

We've simply allowed a handful of self-professed socially superior fat-cats to superimpose their views and constructs on our American institutions.

Can anyone in their wildest thoughts believe that a limited assemblage of unelected high priests in the financial temple conjure up $600,000,000,000.00 dollars to be handed out by a few select upper-crust cronies to their friends under the belief they are so important to our system that we shall fail without keeping them flush in their bonuses and high styles!?!? This is done by a small group of chosen financiers sitting in a closed room under secret auspices without so much as a Congressional briefing or any debate whatsoever! And they sanitize it - Quantitative Easing.

This doesn't count the trillions of dollars which are being wagered under your and my guarantee which only comes from the hard work and real output of our labor. To carry the burden of just the $15 trillion current indebtedness, not counting entitlements, state and local debt, credit cards, etc., you and I have been obligated by this corps d'elite to repay $150,000.00 each as working Americans. You can translate this into $50,000.00 each for every man, woman and child in our country!

Adding up total federal, state, local government plus federal debt to the trust funds and including business, household and domestic financial sectors we're somewhere around $57 trillion!

If we include un-funded liabilities and such items as pension obligations which are underwater then total debt (private plus government) is somewhere around $157 Trillion - - equivalent to $508,117 per person - - which is equivalent to $2 million per family of 4. You and I, as working Americans, are obligated to repay $1,570,000.00! And this is on top of your and my ordinary living expenses!

Would anyone imagine that Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe could have envisioned their governmental design leading to such a situation?

This concentrated vermin's nest has led to a choke-hold on the productive elements of our country. Wall Street and the Federal Reserve produce nothing! Yet, via Washington, they can obligate us to the current extent to save their elaborate casino under the guise that their failure would mean the massive failure of us all!!

You and I will work this day in productive labor. Jeffrey Immelt of General Electric sits on $94 billion in untaxed dollars sitting outside the United States. Your and my guarantees provided a governmental bailout to save General Electric Credit! With $14.2 billion in profits GE paid no income taxes for 2010 and, in fact, received a $3.2 billion tax benefit!!

It seems unmistakable to me that we'll continue to turn the "hamster wheel" so long as we deem the needs of a handful of elites and privileged banks trump the wider productive aspects of our society!
